SE40 and SE70 SAFETY EDGES

In general, tactile monitoring systems stop hazardous movements on contact. The numerous different areas of application require the use of various types of devices. SE series safety edges are used to help guard against hazardous shear and crushing points. This is the case on safety doors, lifting platforms, lifting tables or mobile racking systems, for example. Work process tables, warehouse lifts and lift doors are also secured with safety edges. The same can apply to loading bridges, lifting and tilting devices and doors in the industrial sector. A series SE safety edge brings hazardous movements to a reliable halt and helps to prevent damage to machinery and personal injury. With a suitable evaluation unit connected downstream, these systems achieve the safety requirements of EN ISO 13849-1 at Performance Level PL c to e.

SAFETY EDGES: STRUCTURE AND MODE OF OPERATION

Each SE safety edge has only three components: the aluminium profile rail, rubber profile and plug-in sensors. The deformation of the rubber profile of the safety edge serves as the basis for the evaluation. A fail-safe transmitter and receiver unit attached to the ends of the rubber profile forms the centrepiece of the system. The IR signal between the two units is weakened or interrupted altogether if the rubber profile strip is deformed. The change in the signal is analysed by a downstream safety relay module and the hazardous movement is stopped.

IMPORTANT NOTES ON THE USE OF THE SAFETY EDGES

When using an SE safety edge, the speed of the hazardous movement must be below the maximum starting speed of the safety edge. In addition, the profile-specific data and the stopping distance of the hazardous parts must be harmonised. Further information on SE series safety edges, which are available in heights of 40 or 70 mm, can be found in Schmersal's online catalogue or the corresponding PDF brochure.
